A Richter scale for your spirit
I was sitting in a dental chair on the second floor of an old brick building when the 5.4 quake hit Los Angeles today. Since I am a native Angeleno, you would think I’m used to earthquakes. But I’m not. They always make my heart beat fast and remind me of the unpredictability of life.
“For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. For that reason you ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
Earthquakes reveal a lot about people. Some people shift into survival mode while others panic. Some folks are more concerned about others than themselves. One thing is certain:
Earthquakes are natural wake-up calls. Suddenly everyone’s alert!
Today’s earthquake reminded me that if a person’s spirit is sleeping, what will wake it? A nudge? A whisper? If the response to earthquakes is any indicator, perhaps it takes a jolt to get a spirit out of bed!
“Awake sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.”
Believe it or not, God doesn’t interfere with our lives. He leaves it up to us to decide whether or not we want a relationship with Him. If we’re not interested, He won’t wine and dine us. This means we’re ‘on our own’ until the day we decide God is truly important to us.
“Yes, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.”
I find it interesting how many people ignore God on a daily basis yet cry out to Him the moment they have trouble. Imagine a friend or family member that only calls you when they are in trouble. I wouldn’t call that a relationship.
It’s also interesting how many Christians are willing to be spoon-fed and never take the time to ‘prove’ the doctrines they have been taught. As I have mentioned in previous posts, false doctrines have been in circulation for two thousand years!
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”
Before you can ‘try’ the spirit of a prophet, you have to fix your own spirit. You’ll need to invest your time in studying the Bible and learning the truth before you can identify the lies.
“I know your works, and your labor, and your patience, and how you cannot bear them which are evil: and you have tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and have found them liars.”
If you’re new to the Bible and interested in building a relationship with God, remember this: you’ll need a spirit that’s awake.
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
The Richter scale measures an earthquake.
The Bible measures your spirit.
“All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weighs the spirits.”
Give your spirit a jolt today.
